To see what happens when you put 70 highly motivated girls hockey players in one room to participate in high-intensity off-ice training, watch this…

The event was so much fun (including the part where I stood on top of the sled while two players pushed at a time). You’ll have to check out the full video to see that one.

Here is some of the feedback I got from players and parents who attended the camp:

It was the perfect challenge. Sarah was sore the next day (but a good sore) - so she clearly pushed herself hard enough for it to have an effect, but not so hard that she couldn’t do two hours on the ice the next day.” - Jennifer, parent

Kim, I have to congratulate you on being able to make the exercises fun. My daughter has never been a big exerciser, and now your stories and methods have her anxious to do it again. Thank-you ever so much.” - Thomas, parent

We just want to thank you for a great camp. My daughter and her friend had an amazing time, they said it was so intense but that’s what they hoped it would be. They are really pumped now to get started with workouts together. Thanks again, you were very inspiring to the girls.” - Bonnie, parent

Kim, I had an amazing time. It was everything I expected and more. The intensity was what I loved most about it. Thanks!” - Andrea, player

Total Female Hockey TrainingToday is the 4 year anniversary of my back exploding. I could barely walk, I couldn’t skate and teaching my girls hockey training program was completely out of the question. But it wasn’t just a sneeze that made my back explode. It was over 10 years in the making.

Speed kills in girls hockey. And getting faster, quicker and more agile is not as complicated as it may seem. Check out this video below where I explain the 3 key components to a proper off-ice speed training program.

Girls Hockey Speed CampGetting to the elite levels of women’s hockey is all about being FIRST. You have to be first to the puck, make the first save and be first in on the forecheck and backcheck. And in order to be FIRST, you have to be FAST. Speed is by far the #1 weapon in girls’ hockey, and off-ice training is the #1 way to build speed.

Girls Hockey InjuryGirls hockey players who get injured during the season are constantly being given the same bad advice by their doctors. Telling an aspiring female hockey player to do this not only breaks the young athletes heart, but it is flat out wrong…

Right Way To Train For HockeyTen years ago, as an aspiring female hockey player, I thought I had found the secret when it came to off-ice training. No other girls hockey player I knew was working as hard off the ice as I was and I knew that would give me a serious edge over the competition. I truly believe that my willingness to push myself to be the best player possible off the ice was what allowed me to take my game to the next level. But another consequence of my dedication off the ice was a career filled of injuries and frustration. Here’s what I did right and here’s what I did wrong…

Sleep More, Play Better

Posted by Kim

Girls Hockey SleepGetting enough sleep is critical to increasing hockey performance. The more well rested you are, the better you will perform out on the ice. In fact, sleep may be just as important to a hockey player’s health and well-being as physical activity and proper nutrition. Aspiring girls hockey players who are sleep deprived may not reach their full potential even though they participating in well-designed sports-training and conditioning programs.

I never thought about being sleep-deprived when I was in high school and college, but when I look back on it, I probably averaged about 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep per night. That wasn’t enough to function my best in day to day activities, let alone perform my best while I was out on the ice. So how do you know how much sleep is enough?

Girls Hockey ChinupIn yesterday’s Total Female Hockey newsletter, I told you the story of a US National Women’s Team player who could do 29 pull-ups. I don’t care who you are - male or female, hockey player or not - that is just plain impressive. So if you want to make it to the elite level of women’s hockey, and you can’t even do one pull-up yet, how do you get to 29?

Even though I am in Orlando (not exactly a female hockey mecca), I still wanted to show you some great core exercises you can use to increase your performance in-season.
Get started with these exercises today and take your hockey strength and performance to the next level. Now, it’s back to the sun, before I head back to snowy Toronto tomorrow.

Workout GoalsThe majority of adults who set a new year’s resolution last week probably said that they were going to exercise more in 2009. Even though most girls hockey players don’t have a problem with not exercising enough, they still need to set off-ice training goals for the second half of the season if they want to take their game to the next level.
