Female Hockey NutritionI have something a little embarrassing to admit. Back when I first started playing girls hockey at the age of 13, I was about 6 inches shorter than I am now and weighed 10 pounds more (I am 5 foot 9 and 160 pounds). To be honest, I was a fat little square. Even though my McDiet led to me being 25 pounds overweight, it was still better than the alternative.

Girls Hockey NutritionThis really makes me mad.

Why is that people who choose the “healthy option” are judged as though they are some kind of freak?

Why is it when you have a salad with chicken and a piece of fruit for lunch, people assume that you are on a “diet”?

Why do people think that choosing to eat healthy somehow means that you think you are better than others?

Why is it cool to eat like crap?

Girls Hockey Nutrition FuelI would guess that the majority of girls hockey players are not taking in enough high-quality fuel to give them the energy they need to perform on and off the ice.

But does that mean that you can never eat anything “unhealthy” again?

Girls Hockey CookieI usually only eat out at restaurants once a week. But I’ve been on the road traveling to different girls hockey tournaments and events since Friday and have been eating out a lot. It was your standard fare: fresh fruit, yogurt, bagels and pastries for breakfast, with sandwiches, and salad for lunch. Nothing out of the ordinary, except for the amazing desert that came with lunch. It was a really yummy looking treat that was two large double-chocolate cookies with cream filling (think Oreo on steroids). I stared at those cookies for awhile, deciding whether or not I should eat one. What to do, what to do…

ApplesNew Year’s Day is less than 48 hours away and most “resolution makers” will be focusing on improving their nutrition in 2009. I am making some big changes in the way I eat for 2009 to increase my performance (going from very good to excellent). But I don’t recommend that female hockey players make any big changes until you have taken care of these 4 simple changes first.
