This past Monday, 7 of the girls hockey players I have been training all summer and I headed out to the park for a workout. This was the first time we’d done a outdoor session this summer and they had no idea what to expect. I had a really tough workout planned, which finished off with sprints up a ski hill.
I knew the hill sprints would be the hardest part of the workout, but I had no idea that hill would provide them with such a great lesson. (more…)
Girls hockey players who aspire to reach the elite level of women’s hockey are starting to play at younger and younger ages. Watch the video below to see how early some future Olympians are learning to skate:
I wish I could skate like that at their age!
Just thought I would send it your way and share the fun before heading into the weekend.
Work Hard. Dream BIG.
And drink more water (blatant advertising for Evian here - maybe they’ll send me a cheque).
Players who aspire to play at the highest level either “get it” or they don’t. You have to put in the hard work off the ice in the off-season or else you will be left behind. While more girls hockey players are training than ever before, many of them will not get the pay-off they deserve when they hit the ice in the fall because of self-sabotage. So here are the 9 most common ways players sabotage their summer training. Make sure to avoid these if you want to be at your best in September and all season long. (more…)
For the last 3 weeks, the members of the new Total Female Hockey Training Team have been working hard to take their game to the next level (that’s NOT them in the picture). There is no doubt in my mind that these girls hockey players have what it takes to become female hockey rock stars. Do you? (more…)
In order for you to take your game to the next level, you need to workout off the ice. Period. But what should a proper girls hockey training session include? Check out the video to watch me demonstrate what a workout from the Total Female Hockey Complete Training System looks like.
Simple as that.
Our brand-new Total Female Hockey “Tryout Training Team” just started their off-season training program this week - and these players are awesome. They are focused on doing whatever it takes to become the best players they possibly can - whether that means doing burpees, pushing weighted sleds or doing chin-ups (awesome!). As we finished up our session last night, one of the girls asked me when we were going to be riding the bikes? We have about 50 of them at the gym and they look “cool”, so of course, players want to use them. But should they? (more…)
Now that tryouts are done and summer hockey is on the horizon, I have been receiving a lot of questions from girls hockey parents asking about getting their daughters on the ice this summer. Can a power skating camp actually improve skating technique over a short time period? Is going to hockey camp over the summer really worthwhile? Here’s what I think… (more…)
Girls hockey is expensive. That’s nothing new. And it seems that the better you get, the more hockey you “have” to play, and the more it all costs. Parents, coaches and associations have to find ways to get these escalating costs under control if we hope to keep the game growing at the grassroots levels and want to continue to develop elite-level players from this system. Off-ice training is a great way to off-set costs. However, this option is rarely explored because many people still believe that off-ice training has to be expensive and time-intensive in order to be effective. And that simply isn’t true. (more…)
So here’s the scoop. I want you to click on the link below to watch this 3 minute video of me doing the training that helped me make my hockey dreams a reality at the park across the street from where I grew up. But before you do, I have 1 BIG promise to make to you beforehand.Every player who follows the Advanced Strength Training program in the Total Female Hockey Complete Training System to the letter is going to be able to do at least 1 FULL CHIN-UP by the end of the program.
No, I am not kidding.
But do you need to be able to do chin-ups to play at the elite levels of womens hockey? Not necessarily, but I can guarantee that you need to get stronger. A lot stronger. Click on the link below to watch the hockey workouts that are going
to help you get stronger this off-season.
The truth is most girls hockey players aren’t strong enough to compete at the elite level.
And getting stronger off the ice will make you a better player on the ice.
=> Getting stronger is going to give you a more explosive first-step.
=> It’s going to give you a more powerful shot.
=> It’s going to help you dominate all the 1-on-1 battles in the corner.
You many not be able to do 5 or 10 chin-ups, but you need to start with one. It takes players an average of 9 weeks to do their first chin-up - when they use the proper girls hockey training program.
Your solution to getting to the next level is simple:
Get Stronger = Get Better.
If you are 100% committed to getting to the elite level, and if you are ready to commit to put the work in to get there, together we can make your hockey dreams a reality.
I have to admit, I HATE watching baseball on TV. No matter how hard I try, I can’t help but channel surf the whole time. I used to go to Jays’ games back in their glory days in the ‘90s, so I don’t mind in-person baseball. Even though I find TV baseball mind-numbing, this video about a hockey goalie taking up baseball is HILARIOUS…
Just a little hockey humor to get you through Friday - the “hoser” comment is genius.
I may not like watching baseball on TV, but it is a great sport for developing hand-eye coordination, speed, power and reaction time. All girls hockey players need to play other sports this summer so that they can develop the all-around athleticism they need to compete at the next level on and off the ice. There are certain sports that give you a better “bang for your buck” in terms of developing athleticism (soccer, lacrosse, martial arts), but the truth is, anything is better than playing MORE HOCKEY in the summer.
Take a break from the rink, play some other sports, and of course, do your off-ice training.
Work Hard. Dream BIG.
