What is developing breakaway girls hockey speed really all about? Watch the five videos on off-ice speed training below and you’ll get a better idea of just a few of the concepts I will be covering in the upcoming Total Female Hockey Speed Camp.

The Original Girls Hockey Speed Video

Pretty good for someone with the spine of a 70 year-old.

The Sequel - The 3 Key Parts of Girls Hockey Speed

A quick break from the music videos - now I am actually going to explain something.

Hockey Training For Power

Now for a slightly harder set of girls hockey power drills.

Single Leg Power for Hockey

Now for the high-speed versions of the hockey power exercises you saw in the last two videos.

Girls Hockey Power Done Quickly

There you have it. Five quick videos of girls hockey speed.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

My absolute favorite exercise to use with my girls hockey teams and training group is perfect for 10 year old goalies and 17 year olds forwards. It plays a huge role in improving their hockey-specific strength and preventing all kinds of injuries. And most importantly, it is so much fun.

How To Fit It All In

Posted by Kim

Fit It InHow often do you find that you get to the end of the day and you have completely run out of time? Time to read, time to study, time to train, time to play…sometimes it is feels impossible to fit it all in.

And sometimes even the best solutions get thrown out the window…

The concussion rate in girls hockey is downright scary. Studies have show that girls’ hockey players are 2 times more likely to suffer a concussion than male hockey players and almost 3 times more likely than football players.

Hockey Concussion

I shared these numbers, and my own concussion story, with the local media and the story has spread like wildfire across North America. All this coverage has sparked a great debate about WHY these injuries are happening and IF the research numbers are accurate.

You can debate the statistics and the causes ‘til you are blue in the face.

But I am NOT willing to wait for more girls to sustain serious head injuries to support (or refute) the numbers before I start taking action. And you shouldn’t wait either.

Girls hockey players know they are going to get hit out on the ice…but do they know how to protect themselves properly?

Girls hockey has the one of highest concussion rates in all of team sports and the statistics are downright scary: 1 out of every 1000 times a girl is “exposed” to the game (either through practice or a game), they will get a concussion. That means on a team of 20 girls, there will be one concussion for every 50 “exposures”. With each girls’ hockey team averaging about 100 “exposures” per season, that works out to 2 concussions per team per season. This is not just a scary statistic - this is verging on an epidemic!

Enough of the doom and gloom already…Let’s talk about how we’re going to FIX the problem.

Balance Basics

Posted by Kim

Single-leg balance is the most fundamental component of developing game-breaking speed.

There are 3 keys to mastering basic single-leg balance:

• Hips Back
• Knee Bent
• Chest Up

Not only is single-leg balance critical for speed development - it is also one of the easiest concepts to teach and train OFF the ice.

‘Getting low’ can be a difficult concept for young players to grasp when they are on the ice, as it is much more difficult to assume a low balanced position while in skates than standing on the ground.

Master single-leg balance off the ice and watch your on-ice performance soar.

So…how low can you go?

Until next time,

Kim
