OK so I have to admit that I like to think outside the box when it comes to off-ice training - and female hockey player development in general. Watch the 2 minute video below and you will see one of the strangest off-ice training exercises I use when training girls hockey players. It looks hilarious, gets a ton laughs, and it just plain works.
Did you find it? What can I say…it may look strange, but it is a great way for girls hockey players to use their own body-weight to get a great back workout. Once they got the hang of it, the girls did a great job with this off the ice.
This was part of one of the 3 off-ice training sessions these aspiring female hockey players did with me during the first-ever Total Female Hockey Experience event at the end of August.
Not only did I introduce them to exercises they had never seen before off the ice, they also got to experience state-of-the-art on-ice testing with NEXT testing and on-ice sessions with my friend Brooke (who also happens to be one of the best coaches I know). We did off-ice testing, nutrition workshops and mental performance sessions. The two most popular workshops of all were 3-time Canadian Olympian Sami Jo Small’s inspirational “Olympic Experience” talk and Brooke’s information-packed “College Hockey Secrets” workshop.
Having the opportunity to come to an event like this as a young player would have completely transformed my experience in female hockey. I am honored to share this experience with girls hockey players who share the same passion and determination to be their best as I did.
Thanks for a wonderful event - hope to see you next summer at the Total Female Hockey EXPERIENCE sequel.
Your friend and coach,
Kim
