I was in Philadelphia this week and I thought it would be awesome to go run up the “Rocky” steps. I used to do running and jumping drills up the stairs all the time back when I was playing at the elite levels of women’s hockey. You’ll find a little video of my Rocky style sprint below.
Running up the Rocky steps wasn’t exactly a BIG goal of mine and it wasn’t nearly as tough as I thought they would be, but I am glad that I can say that I ran up them.

So what does the Rocky movie have to do with girls hockey training?

Rocky is a classic “underdog” story.

It’s the story of Rocky Balboa, a struggling boxer trying to make the big time. When he finally gets his BIG shot to fight the heavyweight champion, Rocky gets up at 4:00AM and prepares for a morning run. He breaks a couple of eggs, puts the yolks in a cup and drinks it (I don’t recommend that). At the end of the run, Rocky attempts to run up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum (aka the “Rocky” steps), but can’t reach it all the way because he’s out of shape.

The famous montage of the movie starts with Rocky running around Philadelphia, then in the gym, hitting a speed-bag, doing push-ups and sit-ups. Rocky then runs again this time up the stairs of the Museum and he is able to make it all the way to the top.

There’s no secret why Rocky was able to meet his goals. He set really BIG goals and then worked as hard as he could to meet them.
