When you set a BIG goal, it gives you focus.

When you achieve that BIG goal, you do much more than succeed.

- You become more confident. And that confidence allows you to set (and achieve) even bigger goals.

- You find out that you have the power to inspire and motivate others.

- You discover that nothing that can stop you when you put your mind to achieving a goal and take the action needed to make it happen.

There is nothing more rewarding than setting a BIG goal and achieving it.

And that’s why I’m holding the “Take Your Game To The Next Level” Contest for the next 12 weeks here on my blog.

I want to help you set and achieve BIG goals in 2009, and with only 12 weeks left in the season, now is the perfect time to start.

There will be 4 winners in this contest. In all, I am giving away over $1,000 in prizes and they get BIGGER and BETTER as the contest continues.

Prize #1 - This will go to the person with the “Best Goal Setting” Story. Prize #1 includes a 30 minute phone consultation with me to help you put the weekly goals and action steps in place that will move you closer to your BIG goal, as well as a Total Female Hockey T-Shirt (total value $200). Maybe you want to win the league championship. Or you want to move up into the top half of the league standings. Maybe you want to win the starting position in net. Or work your way up from the third line to the first line. Maybe you just want to solidify your position on the team for next season. Whatever it is, I want to hear your story of what you want to achieve and what it would mean to you to achieve it.

Prize #2 and #3 - These prizes will go to the person who takes the “Best Goal Getting” Action throughout the contest. Each of these winners will receive a copy of the Total Female Hockey In-Season Strength program, as well as a Total Female Hockey T-Shirt (total value $250). These prizes will be awarded to the person who shows the most commitment to achieving their BIG Goal through the first 4 weeks of the contest (prize awarded on February 1st) and through the second 4 weeks of the contest (prize awarded on March 1st). Every Monday, you will share your weekly goal and the 3 actions steps that you are going to take to get there. Every Sunday, you will report back on your progress and share your success story on how the actions you took that week moved you closer to your ultimate goal for the season. I want you to share your weekly success stories to help inspire and motivate others to give it their all and transform their season too!

Prize #4 - This grand prize will go to the person that shares the Ultimate Success Story. This prize won’t necessarily go to the person who achieves their BIG Goal, but to the person who takes the most action toward that goal. This grand prize winner will receive the brand-new, super-sized version, of the Total Female Hockey Off-Season Training System so that they can continue taking their game to the next level in the summer. They will also get their own exclusive Total Female Hockey gear and one of the first ever copies of the Total Female Hockey Scholarship Project (total value $600). This winner will be chosen based on the amount of consistent action they are taking towards their BIG Goal on a weekly basis throughout the entire 12 week contest.

To enter the “Take Your Game To The Next Level” Contest, all you have to do is tell me what your BIG goal is for the rest of the season and what achieving that goal will mean to you.

- Does it mean that you will transform your season from being “just another year” to being “your best season ever”?

- Does it mean that you’ll have the chance to show everyone who has ever doubted you that you can (and will) succeed?

- Does it mean that all the hard work and dedication you have put into the season will all be worth it in the end?

Whatever it means to you, please let me know. Just post your story in the comments section below. Tell me what your BIG Goal is and what it will mean to you to achieve it.

The Best Goal Setting Story part of the contest ends Friday, Jan 9th at midnight. I’ll announce the winner on Monday, Jan 12th and that’s when you’ll submit your first weekly goal and the 3 action steps that you are going to take to move closer to your BIG goal in that first week.

I look forward to hearing your story. I’m sure it will be powerful and will inspire others like you to take their game to the next level as well.

Dream BIG and Set A BIG Goal.

  1. Coach Kim says:

My BIG Goal for the rest of the season is to win the Provincial Championships with my team. I first started playing hockey with many of these girls back when we were in junior high and it would mean so much to win a provincial title with them 15 years later. They are such a talented and inspirational group of women, both on and off the ice, and it would be a privilege to win the championship with them.

  2. Allison says:

My BIG Goal for this season is to help my team remain undefeated in the regular season and to make it to the championships. I also have a secondary goal of getting into better shape to try out for the Golden Blades league for “C” division next summer. I believe I can achieve these goals by working hard and just trying to better myself on and off the ice.

    Cheers
    Allie

  3. Hannah says:

My BIG goal is to move up to a ‘main line’ on the national squad as i was an extra foward, i also want to remain positive with my struggling club team and not give up when losing.
    :-)

  4. Lina says:

My Big goal for the rest of the season is to improve my play and to get my confidance level up. It’s my 3rd year playing hockey and my first one playing Body Contact so i lose my confidance some times when i get hit hard or hurt. I never give up playing Hockey it just to FUN!!!

My Big Goal for the rest season is to get myself strong and confident with this program, so i will be able to tryout and hopefully be able to make chicago mission(best team in the state)=) ~Jaime Goalie Girl

  6. Monika Barrett says:

The weekend before New Years, my coach wanted to know if anyone wanted to play defense for a game. I had played defense when i was a squirt, but now I’m a bantam and thought, why not? After the game he told me I should seriosly consider switching positions. I did. So my goal for 2009 is to become a better defensive player and become better conditioned. My other goal is to live up to the past goal and to try my hardest at everything that I do.

  7. daniela dellorto says:

i have played winger up until a couple of months ago and now i am playing center!!! which is everything i alwayz wanted. but now i have to play hard every game and never give up and that is my goal: to never stop trying because the game isnt over until the final buzzer. so why not just give it all and then go have fun after the game knowing that you tryed your hardest. my other goal is to play better defensivly to help my defense and goalie those are my goals

  8. Marie Soukup says:

My team is not doing as well as I had hoped, and my coach doesn’t do anything to help our team. After talking with my mom and my friends on my team, I decided with my mom to sign up for a training program that will help me get in shape for tryouts. I would do it three times a week and up until the beginning of May, which is the tryouts. I will also being doing Track and Field at my high school, which I feel will be fun cross training and help me condition for hockey before tryouts. I have two goals. One, I want to get in the best shape I have ever been in for tryouts and make a good team. Two, I want to make either Chicago Mission 16s, or Team Illinois 16s. If I achieve these goals, it will make me very happy, and it will challenge me to skate with really, really good girls in Illinois. I have also looked up to these teams a lot, and I have friends who play for them, so it would be one of my BIG goals to make these teams.

  9. Andrea says:

i just started your program, and its already getting me very motivated. Anyways i heard about the contest so i thought i would give it a shot.

I’m the only goalie on my team, and the only female goalie in bantam. We play against boy when we are at home, and we play regular girls hockey when we go out of town. But when we stay at home and play the regular season we are almost always put down by the guys, even when we win games. They put us down so much that we can participate in the playoff’s but sometimes we’re not allowed to win! they take us out of the final match. We sent letter’s and everything and eventually we were allowed to play. But i want to prove something to the guys. I want to make the AA bantam team, to show the boy that a girl can do anything the boy’s can, and we can even make the team’s that not many girl’s ever go out for. But to get my goal I’m going to work harder than I ever have before. But no matter what I want to achieve this goal, not just for the girl’s on my team but for myself. To prove I can do it.

Well that’s my story hope you like it.

  10. Lauren says:

Reading all the messages have made me become clearer and helped me find who and what I wanna be as a grow.

I would love to enter this contest not only for the prize but because I need to do this for were I wanna be and who I want to be.

My goal this year is to be in the best shape that I can be in for 2009. I have recently been finding myself tired and out of breath after shifts in the 2nd and 3rd period.

After putting training on other days aside and saying I’ll do it tomorrow my goal is to train 3 times a week.

They train with me and give me all I need to do to succeed in 2009 and the rest is up to me.

I have putted off training extra for a while now. I’m not the type to do that, I love to workout/train. I’m always at the rink when I can be and feel that this will bring my game to the next year.

Right now as I sit here typing away, I’m filling out an application for training.

Thank you for making me start my new 2009 and being healthy and in shape for the rest of the season.

    Thank you,

    Lauren

  11. Coach Kim says:

Wow! Amazing stories so far. Thank you so much for sharing.

Alison - Congrats on the undefeated season so far. Take all that success you are having on the ice, off the ice, and you will be in great shape for next year’s tryouts.

Hannah - Great job addressing the both physical and mental side of your game. Inspire others on your team with your willingness to work hard and stay positive.

Lina - Keep improving in all parts of your game and soon you’ll be battling in corners for pucks with confidence.

Jaime - Great job setting a big goal. Tryouts are just as much about your mental game as your physical game and you’ll be ready.

Monika - Switching positions can be tough, but you’ve handled it like a pro. Keep up that positive, try anything attitude and you will go far!

Daniela - Congrats on playing center and for sharing the awesome advice about working hard no matter what. Keep up the great work!

Marie - Great job getting specific with your goals and what it will mean to you to achieve them. With that kind of clarity, you are already well on your way to great things.

Andrea - Thanks for the inspirational story. Keep showing those boys what you can do on the ice and they will have no choice to respect you as a great player.

Lauren - The off-ice training piece of the puzzle is definitely going to help you take your on-ice performance to the next level. Take the level of commitment and focus you have on the ice into your off-ice training and you’ll be amazed at the results.

Thanks again. I look forward to hearing more from you and I can’t wait to help you make these goals a reality.

  12. Bonnie says:

I am from a small town called Pangnirtung, Nunavut and we don’t have any artificial ice. I been playing hockey half of my life and I am turning 21 next month. I have been playing with boy’s and men’s. I only get to play with girls every two years when I get to go Toonik Tyme (that’s a tournament that happens every year). On my guy’s team, I been a MVP, and I was a captain in peewees and on my last year midget I was assistant before. Last year I started coaching peewees and I am hope doing this season again. I am in college I am taking pre-employment, I am upgrading my english and math. So my goal is to go canadian forces this summer and after that go for colleges in down south somewhere in Alberta and play a lot hockey there.

  13. Shannon Doyle says:

    Hello Kim,
My BIG goal for this season, but also for this year is to make it back to Calgary and to make the National u18 squad. I got cut this year becuause I am small and I need to be extremely strong so I can hold my ground against the big girls. I want to do this, I dream of doing this. And I know I can do it through the motivation that this program can give me!
    Thanks kim, =]

  14. Hayley says:

    Hello Kim,
My goal for the rest of this season is to have a good attitude when I go to hockey practice. Doing this will help me have fun, and get better. I will do this by getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and thinking of what I enjoy about the practice.
    Work Hard!
    Hayley

  15. Andrea says:

    Hey Kim!
Every year i work my hardest no matter what. I always try to focus on improving key skills each year to step up my game. But this year has been rough because i have had so many little injuries. So each time i get on the ice i work even harder to catch up with how i was before i got injured. My goal this year is to work on all the key skills needed to become the best i can become over all and get a scholarship or even play for the national team or team ontario. It would be a dream to represent ontario or canada for hockey. This goal would mean that all my hard work over the years has finally paid off and in the future i know that i can achieve anything if i just put my mind to it.
    Patience is key!
    Andrea

  16. Molly Tissenbaum says:

    Hey Kim,
My BIG goal for this year has a number of parts
first, after all my injuries that have resulted in time off, i want to get my fitness levels back to where they should be at prime competition level. second, i’m working everyday at my school to ensure that my GAA stays below 2 and that my save percentage stays above .960%. another goal for this season is to be seen by US college scouts as well as make a good midget AA team. my ultimate goal for hockey is an NCAA scholarship and spot on the National team. i know if i take each goal and each step i can get there. and i know that the only place success comes before work is the dictionary. with each step of success i will know all my hard work is paying off.
    -Molly #37

  17. Molly Tissenbaum says:

    hey Kim,
my BIG goal for this year comes in a number of parts, but works towards one thing; improving as an athlete and as a goalie. first, after injuries which resulted in time off i want to get my fitness level back to where it should be to compete. second, i work everyday at my school to ensure that my goals against stays below 2 and that my save percentage stays above .960%. i also have a goal of being seen by college scouts and i am working towards being a starting goalie on a midget AA team next year. my ultimate goals that i will achieve through my small goals and steps are to play for the National team and to go to an NCAA school on a scholarship. i like to live by, train by, and play by the saying “the only place success comes before work is the dictionary.”

  18. Coach Kim says:

Even more great goal setting stories - you guys are all taking such a huge step toward your ultimate success and it is awesome that you are committing to it here.

Bonnie - Great stuff! I really think your story will help to inspire other players who are from small towns as well.

Shannon - Great to hear from you. Keep focusing on getting stronger and you be pushing those other U18s around in Calgary in no time.

Hayley - Thanks for reminding all of us about the importance of staying positive no matter what happens out on the ice. Remember - hockey is a game of mistakes. It’s the team and player who can capitalize on them best that will win.

Andrea - You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned patience. Achieving BIG goals takes a lot of time and effort - but that’s what makes it all worth it when you reach your dreams.

Molly - What a great quote. It will take some work, but with that kind of clarity in your goals and the determination to work towards them daily, you will go far.

Thanks again for sharing these goals - I can’t wait to get started on helping you to break these BIG goals down into smaller goals with specific action steps. Remember - it’s what you choose to do everyday that you will bring you closer to your ultimate goal this season and beyond.

  19. Sarah says:

Hey Kim, I aim to be a star division 1 hockey player and eventully become a team USA player. So far I play boys hockey, because I beleive I will improve more in that kind of hockey, do you have any tips or advice for training

  20. Hannah O. says:

    Hey Kim,
-My first goal is to make my highschool team my junior and senior year as the only girl. I’m hoping for a faster and more aggressive side to come of me. My deadline to make the team is next year’s tryouts.
-My second goal is to eat healthier. Being on the road with tournaments and things don’t help much especially when your in a hurry, but I know that you can still make healthy choices. It’ll be getting into the habit as my 2nd goal. My dad has started eating healthy and has already lost at least 15 lbs. I’m very proud of him. Deadline should have been a long time ago.
-My third goal is to gain weight in muscle, at least 10-15 lbs. My deadline is the healthiest, most appropriate time for me to gain lots of weight in a short amount of time. I don’t know when that is, but hopefully by next season.
-My fourth, and ultimate, goal is to eventually earn a scholarship for either ice hockey or lacrosse (goalie), but hockey would be my dream. Deadline is within the next 2-3 years.

    Thanks! Hannah

  21. crash says:

    Hey Coach Kim
My goal isn’t huge, it doesn’t necessarilly involve winning any championsips or being the best player.I just want ot contribute to my team and be the best player I can be. I know this sounds corny, but I am by no means naturally athletic. I was born with several major heart defects and I’ve spent my life trying to outrun them

As a kid my hero was Raymond Berry a wide receiver for the Baltimore Colts. He was not a natural athlete. In fact he played wearing a back brace, a special shoe to compensate for one leg being much shorter than the other , contact lenses which were not as readily avaliablle they are as today(he often lost them during practice and at times during a game!) and he was not very fast. He was however incredibly dedicated and studious. Through endless practice and using his inate intelligence to break down the minor details of the game that other players(with the exception of his practice partner and QB, Johnny Unitas)overlooked, he went on to become a hall of fame player.

My goal is to follow Raymond Berry’s example and use my intellegence and as much practice as I can get to play beyond my abilities/deficits and hopefully contribut more to my team.

  22. Coach Kim says:

Thanks for sharing more great goal setting stories!

Sarah - Way to set really BIG goals - that will give you even more motivation to set and meet your smaller goals along the way.

Hannah - Excellent job breaking your BIG goals down and giving yourself specific deadlines. That’s excellent that you and your dad can work together to have a healthier 2009.

Crash - Wow! Talk about a motivational story. It is great that you have such an amazing role model to look up to. You will be inspiring teammates with your commitment and athleticism in no time.

Keep those great goal setting stories coming!

    ~ Coach Kim

  23. Tiffany says:

    Hey Kim,
My year on the team that I am on has not gone as I had hoped. I would like to still work hard and achieve my personal goals. I really want to get past this year and next year try to get on a different team. I want to improve my whole game. As a forward my strengths are back checking and passing. I also want to try and get to the net more that would make me be more successful. To do this I will workout more on my own, get stronger, and become a better stick handler and shooter. For the short term, I will work hard at playing the game that I love. I will try to zone out all of the other negative distractions. For the long term, I will keep working toward my development into a better hockey player, playing college hockey and maybe make the USA development camp.
    Thanks Tiffany

  24. Reagan says:

    Hello Hockey Chicks!
My big goal requires a little backgroung. My team has lost 2 games against this really good team this season, scoring only 1 goal in the 2 games. They have giant defensemen that pushed us around in both games. We have a chance for revenge during the state playoffs in February. My BIG GOAL is to get stronger and faster before the rematch, then score 2 goals and have 2 assists in our the big upset! (I’m sorry but I can picture them crying after the game)
My BIG GOAL BONUS is to win the girls tournament in Brantom, Ontario Canada this spring. We won 2 games last year but lost in the quater-finals : (
    Not this year! : )
    Good Luck Everyone!!! - Reagan

  25. Rey Rey says:

My big goal is to get faster. Now this might seem a little wierd to some of you, but it’s not. i am constantly getting told by my parents that i’m slow. My coach even says i need to work harder to skate faster. i have been playing hockey for over 6 years, and i know that im slow. but im going to change that. Starting now im not going to be called slow anymore.

  26. Riley Henderson says:

My goal is to help my team make the Atom AAA Vancouver Island Playoffs. We have to be in the top four to make playoffs and we are currently in 6th. Everybody has written us off. It would mean a lot to me if we make the playoffs because if we make it we have a chance to win it all. Our A team hasn’t won the league championships in a long time. It would be special to share that chance with my teammates. Nobody seems to believe that we can win my goal is to make a difference and turn things around.

  27. Coach Kim says:

These final entries in the Goal Setting part of the “Take Your Game To The Next Level” Contest are awesome.

Tiffany - You’ve got a great opportunity to turn your season around by staying positive and keeping focused on the things you can control out on the ice. By achieving your personal goals, you will help your team achieve theirs.

Reagan - Awesome clarity in your BIG goal. Now that you know exactly what you want to accomplish, you can get started on breaking that goal down into more manageable weekly and daily action steps.

Rey Rey - Speed kills, right? Getting faster is critical for all girls hockey players looking to play at the next level. Getting stronger and faster will definitely help you take your game to the next level.

Riley - Great underdog story. I can’t wait to hear how you and your team achieve your goal of making the playoffs and proving all your doubters wrong.

The Goal Setting part of the contest is over.

    Now the real work begins.

On Monday, I will announce the winner of the 1st of 4 prizes in the contest.

And then the next phase will begin - where we break these great BIG goals down into the weekly goals and daily actions step that are going to help you take your game to the next level.

    Work Hard. Dream BIG.

    See you on Monday!

    ~ Coach Kim

Big Goal- In states and playoffs get into the semi-finals or finals

Week 1- win our game this week. I want to get at least 1 point.

    1. work hard in practice and push myself.

    2. I will not let the small stuff get to me. Like what others say.

    3. I will eat and drink the right things to hydrate my self before and after I skate.

  31. Dannielle C says:

    Dear Coach Kim,

I know I am too late for the contest, but here is my goal, anyhow.

Three years ago, I entered high school as a freshman. Little did I know that my school had an excellent hockey team. Little did I care. At that point, I confess, I did not give a thought to hockey. As an uncoordinated, nonathletic person who secretly desired sports success, I was so jealous of others who could play- and boys who could openly like sports- that I sniggered at most sports, including hockey. I admit that when I found a new friend checking the Penguins’ website, I laughed, claiming they were just as hopeless as the Pirates, so watching them was useless. Now, I feel absolutely terrible about saying and thinking such things, but that is the truth. However, that friend consistently shared with me tidbits of the Pens’ victories, and I became interested in spite of myself. That same friend invited me to a high school football game. At the end of the match, she told me I simply had to attend a high school hockey game. A few months later, on 30 January 2007, I went with her to a game. It was cold and snowy, and we arrived breathless and late, but we were there. And I fell completely and hopelessly in love. The players were so fast, so athletic, so strong, so spectacular! By the end of the first period, I was concocting plans to try hockey myself. More than that; I knew that I desperately wanted to play for this team. But I thought hockey was an elite boys’ sport, not something I could really play. I had no idea that more than a couple of girls played. Regardless, I schemed as I watched nearly every Pens’ game and attended nearly every high school game. Eventually, my subconscious decided to get involved. I became haunted by hockey. I would dream of it for weeks at a time, day dream about it at class, and obsessively go to every game I could. One day, in the midst of this hockey mania, I came across a women’s learn to play league at the local rink. Within days, I persuaded my parents to let me join. On 15 April, I stepped on the ice in my gear for the first time. Hockey was supposed to be a quaint little pastime, an innocent, occasional indulgence- or so my parents thought. Oh, no. I became more and more addicted. A few months later, I joined my current team. Now, nearly two years after my hockey anniversary, my goal is the same as it was the moment I first saw a live game; I want to play for my school team!

This season, I have been practicing with the team. That is wonderful, and I have improved quite a bit, but my original goal remains unfulfilled. I have only one more year, one more season to capture my dream. I knew I had to have a plan. I also know that I have to act quickly and impress the coach during this season. Here is the plan I created to help me do so:

BIG GOAL: Consistently play for my high school team next season- and contribute!

Slightly Smaller Goal One: Warm up before and after every practice and game. I have been trying to do so, and it helps quite a bit. (Thanks for the great warm ups in the Best Hockey Season Ever, by the way.) If I am warmed up and ready for practice, I will be more likely to impress.

Slightly Smaller Goal Two: Improve my sleep habits. With lots of crazy AP classes and the like, my schedule can get quite cramped. I allot very little time to sleep, which I realize to be a mistake. The more well rested I am, the better I will perform.

Slightly Smaller Goal Three: Eat better food and have a consistent meal schedule. I am a busy, picky vegetarian, so this is difficult. While I have gotten so much at resisting tempting things (oh, Death By Chocolate Gelato!) I still do not eat the best things, and I tend to eat them at random times. Eating breakfast also seems like a great idea…

Slightly Smaller Goal Four: Always work hard at practice. The harder I work, the better I do. Also, I am sure that the coach can see my effort level, and will appreciate it when I give him my all. I always try to do this, but lack of sleep and proper nutrition, as well as sore and cold muscles, slow me down. The faster I skate, the more goals I score… the better I look. Also, I intend to incorporate more checking into my game when we scrimmage. Sometimes I catch myself and hesitate before a check (darn those female hockey instincts!), and I want to stop that. When I do check, the coach is always very impressed. Also, I think acting aggressively helps him understand that although I am a girl, I really am not a fragile porcelain doll. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, after a check, I not only can be put back together- I never fall apart in the first place!

So, that’s the plan. I hope to incorporate is ASAP- I already have begun, in segments. Practice was tonight, but there is no reason not to show the same effort and energy at my girls’ practices. They may not be my dream team, but they are MY team. Besides; doing well with them boosts my confidence, which improves my performance at high school practice.

    Wish me luck!

    Dannielle

  32. Dannielle C. says:

Here is a more specific set of weekly goals.

    1. Skate hard and work hard at girls’ practice on Thursday. It may not be as fun as guys’ practice, but it is just as important- more so, even, because we need to come together as a team.

    2. Work harder to gain a rhythm with my wing partner. We have been paired up for a few months, but we still do not work well together. Either we have the exact same instincts, or opposite ones.

    3. Play a strong, team game against this weekend’s two opponents. One is a tough team that we need to beat, particularly if we hope to make the playoffs. The other is obviously much worse than us, but we tend to fall apart and lose to them, for some unexplainable reason. This is a MUST WIN game for us- not just for our prides, but for our standing and playoff hopes as well. I had quite a good points per game rating at the beginning of the season, but I have been scoreless for the past five games or so. Unacceptable. I want to play good team games this weekend, but I also want to up my individual effort. I need to trust myself enough to try some things instead of taking the repulsively simple option every time, i.e. immediately passing. I want to carry the puck more, use more pressure on the boards, and take shots from somewhere other than the office, if possible! I love my job as a gritter rebound-eater in front of the net, but I want to be more than that. If I get a point this weekend- great. If not, at least I know I have nothing to be ashamed of.

    4. I want to find ways to incorporate my main goals- eating well, warming up, and sleeping- into my regular schedule, particularly as it pertains to this weekend. Time management is the key! Speaking of which, I have homework to do…

My Goal is to become a pro-star. I really think that if I work hard I could go to the games in Vancouver.
