Today I am announcing the WINNER of the “Goal Setting Challenge” of the Total Female Hockey “Take Your Game To The Next Level” contest. All of the goal setting stories were really inspiring, which made it that much harder to choose the winner.
Congratulations to…
Hannah, The Winner of the “Goal Setting Challenge” in the Total Female Hockey Take Your Game To The Next Level Contest!
Here is Hannah’s Contest Winning Goal Setting Story:
Hey Kim,
- My first goal is to make my high school team my junior and senior year as the only girl. I’m hoping for a faster and more aggressive side to come of me. My deadline to make the team is next year’s tryouts.
- My second goal is to eat healthier. Being on the road with tournaments and things don’t help much especially when your in a hurry, but I know that you can still make healthy choices. It’ll be getting into the habit as my 2nd goal. My dad has started eating healthy and has already lost at least 15 lbs. I’m very proud of him. Deadline should have been a long time ago.
- My third goal is to gain weight in muscle, at least 10-15 lbs. My deadline is the healthiest, most appropriate time for me to gain lots of weight in a short amount of time. I don’t know when that is, but hopefully by next season.
- My fourth, and ultimate, goal is to eventually earn a scholarship for either ice hockey or lacrosse (goalie), but hockey would be my dream. Deadline is within the next 2-3 years.
Coach Kim’s comments:
It was the clarity and specificity of these BIG goals that really drew me to Hannah’s story. She has a BIG dream, has figured out the stepping stones she needs to achieve along the way, has given herself a deadline and is ready to take action. I can’t wait to chat with Hannah and help her to write out her weekly goals for the rest of the season and the specific action steps that will get her closer to her BIG goal each and every day. I know that when Hannah sets her plan in motion, she will quickly realize that she can take her game to an even higher level than she ever imagined.
I hope that this contest has inspired you to set some BIG goals for the next 12 weeks and beyond. If you haven’t already shared your BIG goal and what it will mean to you to achieve it, I encourage you to post it here. There are still 11 weeks left in the season and 3 more BIG prizes to win the on February 1st, March 1st and March 23rd, 2009. And I will be here to support you every step of the way as you take action every day towards achieving those goals.
Now it’s on to the next phase of the contest - The “Goal Getting Challenge”.
Once you’ve set your BIG goal, you need to break it down into smaller weekly goals with daily actions steps of how you are going to get there.
Here’s what you need to do to take part in the “Goal Getting Challenge”:
- Come to the blog each Monday.
- Share your 1 goal for the week that is going to take you closer to your BIG Goal.
- Share 3 action steps that you are going to take to move you closer to your weekly goal.
- Every Sunday, you will report back on your weekly goals and share the story of how taking your 3 action steps helped you to move closer to your weekly goal.
I will be here every Monday to help you to set your weekly goals and figure out the 3 action steps you need to take to get there. I will also be here every Sunday to help you celebrate the great success stories that you are going to share.
Then we will repeat the process every week until the contest is done. I will pick the 2nd and 3rd winners of the contest based on how much action they are taking towards their BIG goal every week. These winners will receive copies of the Total Female Hockey In-Season Strength System as well as Total Female Hockey T-shirts. I will also choose the GRAND prize winner on based on the ultimate success story that they will share after 12 weeks of consistent goal setting and goal getting.
Remember - the only way I can know whether you are consistently taking action toward your goals is to see you share your goals every Monday and your success stories every Sunday in the comment section below the blog entry for that day on Total Female Hockey Club.
I guarantee that after taking consistent action, you will be much closer to your BIG goal and we will be celebrating all of your amazing success in 12 weeks.

Hi Kim
My goal for the week is to help my team win an important game on Sunday by being focused and giving 100% effort all week.
My three action steps are:
1. Get mentally focused and physically ready before each of my 4 practices and game this week.
2. Healthy living - eat the right foods, stay hydrated and sleep well.
3. Learn from mistakes by really listening to the coaches and asking questions if I don’t understand what they mean.
Have a great week.
Riley
Big Goal- In states and playoffs get into the semi-finals or finals
Week 1- win our game this week. I want to get at least 1 point.
1. work hard in practice and push myself.
2. I will not let the small stuff get to me. Like what others say.
I will eat and drink the right things to hydrate my self before and after I skate.
Dear coach Kim and fellow hockey stars,
I am so excited about this weeks goals!!!!!!!!
#1 I want to eat at least six servings of fruits and veggies a day!!!
#2 I want to drink more water, my set goal is 8 glasses a day.

My first goal will help me get stronger.
My 2nd will be to keep me heathy.
And 3rd to keep me in shape. Also so my brain doesn’t turn to mush!!!!!
Thanks so much for having this contest,
Reagan
Great job with breaking down your BIG goals into more manageable weekly goals girls. Remember to keep track of how well you do on your action steps each and every day. The key to drinking more water (since you all mentioned it) is having a water bottle with you at all times and making sure that you drink from it and refill it all day long. Also remember to set your specific goals of exactly what you want to accomplish at every practice and game this week before you step on the ice. Write it down if you can and take a minute after you are done the ice session to record how you did on your goals. If you were successful, why were you successful? If not, why not?
Have a terrific week and I look forward to hearing your great success stories on Sunday.
Work Hard. Dream BIG.
~ Coach Kim
Here is a more specific set of weekly goals.
1. Skate hard and work hard at girls’ practice on Thursday. It may not be as fun as guys’ practice, but it is just as important- more so, even, because we need to come together as a team.
2. Work harder to gain a rhythm with my wing partner. We have been paired up for a few months, but we still do not work well together. Either we have the exact same instincts, or opposite ones.
3. Play a strong, team game against this weekend’s two opponents. One is a tough team that we need to beat, particularly if we hope to make the playoffs. The other is obviously much worse than us, but we tend to fall apart and lose to them, for some unexplainable reason. This is a MUST WIN game for us- not just for our prides, but for our standing and playoff hopes as well. I had quite a good points per game rating at the beginning of the season, but I have been scoreless for the past five games or so. Unacceptable. I want to play good team games this weekend, but I also want to up my individual effort. I need to trust myself enough to try some things instead of taking the repulsively simple option every time, i.e. immediately passing. I want to carry the puck more, use more pressure on the boards, and take shots from somewhere other than the office, if possible! I love my job as a gritter rebound-eater in front of the net, but I want to be more than that. If I get a point this weekend- great. If not, at least I know I have nothing to be ashamed of.
4. I want to find ways to incorporate my main goals- eating well, warming up, and sleeping- into my regular schedule, particularly as it pertains to this weekend. Time management is the key! Speaking of which, I have homework to do…
Great to hear from you Dannielle. Your explanation of being a “gritter rebound eater” in front of the net reminds me of the first few years of my college career.
To help with your goal of working better with your wing partner, have a chat with her about what both of you are trying to accomplish out there. If it turns out that you have different goals, each of you may need to adapt your play accordingly in order to make it work.
I know that fitting in the warm-ups and workouts from the in-season program can be hard when you are so busy, but keep finding the time somewhere and you will be rewarded with a better performance out on the ice.
Have a great week!
~ Coach Kim
My goal for this week is to help my team win the tournament we’re playing in.
My three goals are:
* 1 Focusing on the upcoming games. What are my responsibilities on the ice, what am i going to do to be ready for the game, and what am i going to focus on.
* 2 Eating healthy so as to get my body ready for the work, getting enough carbs and protein, and staying hydrated.
* 3 Making sure that i am physically ready for the work, keeping my muscles stretched and strong, and keeping myself active, but not enough to get me tired.
Hey Kim!
This weeks goal:
- To focus on schoolwork and on making the right plays during my next 2 games
Actions
1. Study hard for exams to keep my good grades up so i can get in to a good university. (to make getting a scholarship easier because you need both grades and hockey skill)
2. Get lots of sleep and drink lots to be able to keep focus both during school and on the ice to make those smart plays.
3. Work on hard, on the tape passes and good smart breakouts in the next practice to able me to play smart in my games.
Patience is key!
Andrea #7
Awesome stuff girls!
Rey Rey - Good luck in the tournament. Can’t wait to hear about all your success on Sunday. Drink a ton and make sure to warm-up before each game and stretch afterward.
Andrea - I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you on your exams. Having a plan will really keep you focused on and off the ice. Work towards your goals daily and your patience will be worth it.
Have a great week! See you on here on Sunday.
~ Coach Kim
My goal for this week is to make a pass whenever I can during my games. I have a tournament this weekend, so I will have a lot of chances to work on it.
Three things I will do to get this goal are
1. Look for an open teammate
2. Call for a pass when I am open, then be ready to pass it back.
3. Pass on the tape of the other players stick.
Hmmm… Not the best hockey weekend for me, I’m afraid. We lost our game yesterday 3-1 and tied today 1-1… although the Pens shut out the Rangers, 3-0, and cheered me up! Obviously, the game results were not good, and I am afraid that I am not pleased with myself, either. As far as what progress I made on each of my goals…
1. I was absurdly pumped to practice Thurday, but Pittsburgh was experiencing some extremely cold weather: about 2 F below, plus (or minus, I suppose) windchill. Practice was canceled because were scheduled to practice on the “outdoor,” and presumably cold, rink. I completely disagreed. I wanted to practice no matter what the weather, and I have never thought that rink any colder than the others. It really is not outside. Only one side is exposed, and it is covered with heavy plastic strips. So, needless to say, I could not accomplish my first goal.
2. I could not really complete this goal, either! My coach suddenly decided to switch up the lines. They were irregular yesterday, and today I had a new partner! However, I have always maintained that my new linemate and I (the centers rotate, so no change, there) are a perfect match. We compliment each other very well and seem to have very similar instincts. I was very excited, and she nearly tapped in one of my rebounds, but as I got ridiculously short-shifted, I did not have much time with her.
3. As you can probably tell by my tone, I am in a bit of a mood. Today in particular, I had VERY few shifts. In the few that I had, I think I did fairly well- I got a pretty shot on net, at least, and had another chance as well. However, when I play only a few minutes, how can I expand on that? I do not know what to do, and I do not understand why this is happening. At the beginning of the season, I played frequent, regular shifts, and I had about five points in seven games. After that, for no apparent reason, I began to get less playing time, and have since been scoreless. I am not surprised; if I am not on the ice, I cannot score! My team has also lost all but one or two of these games; again, not a huge surprise to me. The coaches play the same girls who make the same mistakes. Funny thing; beyond my points, I have a very high plus/minus rating. I can only recall being on the ice for two or three goals against. That is probably one of the top three plus/minuses on the team, yet as of late I have not been counted on to play. I may not be perfect, and I may not always get the job done or perform a fancy move, but I really do not make stupid mistakes or selfish decisions, like those on our top lines. I think part of this can be attributed to a tournament I missed, which the coaches mistakingly thought I could attend. My team plays in two leagues, one a local league, and one a travel league (travel as in leave at around 4 AM Saturday morning, drive 7 hours, play 2 games, sleep, play 2 games, drive 7 hours, arrive home late Sunday, complete a massive amount of AP homework). My parents and I have always said that I really cannot go to such tournaments; it should be a treat and a surprise when I can. That was the deal. But my coaches got rather upset about this particular weekend, and my playing time started to seriously slide. I played the best game of my life (I was credited for at least 2 points, but I believe I had a third assist, which the referee may not have given) the weekend before, but only some of the minor coaches could come. So I only get credit for missing that tournament. I try so hard when I do play, but what can I do with 5 minutes or under? Really, it is getting past the point of toleration or patience. No one seems to understand why this is happening. What is your advice? How should I deal with this?
4. I have been eating better, I believe. Sleep is harder to come by, but I was proactive and got my homework done early this weekend. On Saturday’s game, the referees were very late, so I got loads of time to warm up, which definitely helped; I think I had two of my best first and second periods ever, although I tired in the third. I have been trying to stretch more, particularly as a cool down, too. When I do, I am never sore, which is always great. Both games this weekend were away games, making everything more difficult. Things should improve this weekend. We have to stay overnight, but that should make everything easier and more relaxed than rushing out of my home for away games.
Dear Coach Kim,
Sorry I am a day late on what I did to accomplish my goals. I got in late from Michigan. I had a tournament. We won the championship. What I did to do that was I drank a ton of water. I ate a BUNCH of fruit. And I didn’t watch any TV. But I did do my pushups.
My goal for this week is to win all three of my hockey games by running on the treadmill every day. Also to go to the gym 2 times this week. And last but not least to skate on my backyard ice rink everyday this week.

My goal for this week is so work on my backhand shot and pass. I backhand is very weak.
1. Take atleast 200 shots everyday, mostly backhand shots.
2. Concentrate at practices
3. Ask for advice from my coaches and get pointers.
4. Try to take backhand shot when i can in practice and games.
Here are my goals for this week:
1. Impress at practice. I already had two practices this week, but one remains on Thursday. Hopefully, if I do well, I will get more playing time this weekend.
2. Score. I have two games this weekend, both against Erie. We are a better team, and I scored both my first goal and first assist against them. I know I can score this weekend, and I am going to do everything I can to do so. I want to still play a team game, but scoring helps the team, no? Besides; if I hope to regain my coaches’ trust/affection, scoring seems like a good idea.
3. Confer with my semi-teammates from the school team. They have a lot of good advice to offer, and they are always eager to help. I plan to discuss some of my girl team’s issues with them- as well as my personal problems obtaining playing time- in the hopes of getting some good suggestions.
4. Pay more attention when watching hockey. Whenever I watch Pens games (like now) or other games, I tend to get so excitable that I do not pay as much attention as I ought to formations, etc. Although this is the last Penguins game before the All Star Break, the school team plays on Friday. I hope to pick up on such things during the rest of this game as well as Friday’s.
5. Continue to improve my eating, sleeping, and warming up habits.
