Team CelebrationWhen I was an aspiring girls hockey player, I set two HUGE goals of playing college hockey and making the national team. Pretty big stuff for someone who had only been playing hockey for two years! And even though I worked so hard every single day to achieve those goals, I was missing one critical thing that would have made it all so much easier.

FOCUS.

Once you’ve SET your goals and you’ve given yourself a specific deadline,
you need to FOCUS.

Let’s say that your 12 week goal is to win the Provincial or
State Championships (I always tell you to dream big, don’t I?).

Here’s how you might break your big goal down into your
specific weekly goals with specific daily action steps:

Big Goal: Win the Provincial or State Championships in April.

Week 1 Goal: Win our 2 games this weekend.

3 Action Steps I Will Take To Get There:

1) I will focus on communicating out on the ice with my teammates at practice to get our timing back after the holiday break.

2) I will drink 2 liters of water everyday to keep myself hydrated so I can perform my best. I will carry a water bottle with me at all times and refill it at least 4 times a day.

3) I will stretch every night before bed for 10 minutes to keep myself feeling my best and playing my best throughout the playoff run.

There are a lot of other things that you could focus on out on the ice and in your off-ice preparation that may lead you closer to your goals, but these 3 action steps are guaranteed to make you and your team’s performance better.

3 daily action steps = 1 weekly goal
12 weekly goals = 1 BIG goal

It’s that simple.
