How many push-ups can you do? I ran a Total Female Hockey Push-Up Contest this past weekend at a tournament and I had players, teams and even parents going for the win.

Total Female Hockey Push-Up Contest

And I am talking about real legitimate elbows to 90 degrees, body in a straight line push-ups - not barely bending your elbows or letting your hips sag down to the ground. The player who won the contest completely blew me away - her form was perfect and she managed to pull off…

67 push-ups!

And these weren’t just ordinary push-ups. They were absolutely perfect and she racked them all up in less than a minute.

The number to beat started out at 20. Tons of players were giving it a shot, entire teams were competing against each other and that number made its way up to 42.

And then this player walked in. I have tested Candice at a few elite girls hockey tournaments in the past, so I knew the second she walked in the door that she would pull off a great score.

And sure enough, she pumped out 67 push-ups like it was nothing.

Then a funny thing happened…

All of a sudden, no one wanted to participate in the contest!

They saw the record of 67 and said, “I can’t beat that. Why bother?”

That’s the EXACT kind of attitude that prevents players from reaching their dreams.

Candice didn’t just wake up one day being able to do 67 push-ups. One of the girls who watched her set the record asked her, “HOW did you do that?” And Candice said, “Practice.”

Everyone starts out being able to do ZERO push-ups. And it’s only through practice that you are able to set new personal records of 10, 20, 30+ push-ups.

Those players who saw the top score of 67, knew that they had absolutely no chance of breaking the record and STILL gave it their best shot - those are the players that I want on my team. Those are the players who will push themselves to take their game to the next level even if their chances of winning the game or making the team look bleak.

Nothing worth having ever came easy. If you start out today at 11 push-ups, you can’t get discouraged. The truth is that anyone can do 67 push-ups - you just have to commit to getting better each day. Test yourself today, practice your push-ups with perfect form and then re-test yourself every two weeks to see how you have improved.

How many push-ups can you do? How many are you going to be able to do 1 month or 6 months from now? Set your goal below and then take action on achieving it immediately.

I can only do 6 good form push-ups without having a long pause in between.
I want to be able to do 11 at the end of the month and improve by 5 every month, so in 6 months I want to be able to do 36 proper form push-ups without having a long pause in between.

    Hi Kim,
I can do five right. I’d like to work my way up to 30 or more. Some of the girls on my team don’t weigh anything and they can do them real easy. I’m more solid and it seems to be hard for me. Is it easier if your lighter? I think I’m much stronger than most or all of the girls on my team, so I don’t understand why I have a hard time with push ups. Tonight I did the TGHP program, plus 15 minutes on the eliptical and a set of hand weights and 25 extra sit ups. My shoulders are sore from the y’s and t’s so I didn’t do any extra push-ups.
    See ya!

I can already do 10 so I’m going to adjust my goal of 11 to 20, so that’s an improvement of 14 a month and in 6 months I want to be able to do 84 proper push ups. I may have to adjust this goal later on but for now this is what I’m aiming for.
