It’s October 16th and that means there are exactly 12 weeks left until January 1st, 2009. And I am going to make someone’s New Year’s a great one by rewarding them with the Total Female Hockey “Ultimate Training Package”. The winner will be selected for the amount of passion and drive that they show toward achieving their hockey goals. And there is no better way to determine how serious you are about taking your game to the next level, than by writing out your mission statement.
The most successful players I’ve played with, and the most successful coaches I’ve played for, have all written out their mission statements. If you have never used this powerful motivation & performance strategy, the Total Female Hockey Transformation Contest will give you the kick in the butt to finally take your game to the next level.
To enter the Total Female Hockey Transformation Contest, all you have to do is share your mission statement with me in the comment box below. But I don’t want it to be some broad mission statement like, “I want to get better” - I want to hear what your EXACT mission is in the next 12 weeks.
Don’t be afraid to THINK BIG and write a bold mission statement. Allow me to kick things off with my own personal mission statement for the next 84 days.
Kim McCullough’s mission statement to take her game to the next level is…
Happy 2009! Today is January 1st and I am totally fired up to share the exciting stories of how my players have completely transformed their season in the last 12 weeks! Their hard work and dedication to taking their game to the next level has paid off big time.
Their commitment over the past 84 days have allowed them to:
My players’ success has totally inspired me to take even more action towards my ultimate goal of helping every aspiring girls hockey player reach their goals on and off the ice. Reaching out to as many players, parents and coaches as possible over the last 3 months has been critical in helping me fulfill my life’s purpose.
Every day I have been hearing stories of how players are winning battles in the corners against players who are inches taller and years older. Teams are completely dominating the third period and overtime and other players, parents and coaches are asking them what they are doing differently. I can see the confidence in my players’ eyes when they head out on the ice and share the sense of accomplishment they feel when they reach their goals.
What’s really cool is that the girls are showing off how many push-ups they can do to all of their friends and are much more focused before the games. They love the fact that they are playing better, feeling better and let’s face it - winning.
It’s been the small improvements each and every day that have really made the difference. They aren’t striving for perfection, they have just been aiming to become better today than they were yesterday.
As a coach, what more could I ask for?
So there you go. That’s my mission statement for the next 3 months.
What’s yours???
Start your comment off below with the sentence:
{your name}’s mission statement to take their game to the next level is…
After reviewing all of your entries (which have to be in by midnight October 23rd), I will select the first ever winner of my Total Female Hockey “Ultimate Training Package” (which includes all 4 of my in-season & off-season training programs, plus 4 hours of phone coaching).
NOTE: There will also be another winner announced at the END of the contest (on midnight January 1st) who will receive the Ultimate GRAND Prize for sharing their success story and documenting their entire journey on Total Female Hockey Club for the next 3 months. I will be sharing tips with you every day here on Total Female Hockey Club and I really want to hear how you are using them to take your game to the next level. The more that you comment on the blog entries that have really helped you out, the better the chance that you will win the GRAND prize.
So let’s hear those mission statements. Don’t hold back!

Perry DeNure’s mission statement to take his goalie’s game to the next level is to focus on the details to improve her game in every area. To help her be motivated, build confidence through on and off ice workouts and be prepared to lead her team.
Having her prepared by doing specific drills, will enable her confidence to grow and will be a key to continued improvement.
Her outstanding play will attract scouts on both sides of the border and will build confidence of those around her.
She will continue to lead her team in every statistical category, as well as the league and make every team which faces become frustrated with her athleticism and puck stopping abilities.
Shannon Doyle’s mission statement: I will become known as the defensman with the fastest feet that will be accomponied by smooth hands that will enable me to beat players all over th ice. I will use specified drills to make my feet go from a level 7 out of 10 to a 10 out of 10 , with a speed workout twice a week that will be focused on only making me faster. Although I am not the biggest player on the ice with my size I will become the player with the biggest reputation for my aggressive play and extreme work ethic. I will push myself each day to reach my goals.
Megan Shipton’s mission statement to take my ringette game to the next level is to. . .
Train
We have off ice training session usually once a week, and all though it is not practicing drills for a game it will still effect my game so i will put in all my effort in each exercise, and also support my team mates, because what goes around comes around and it helps to have a positive attitude.
At Practice to lead in drills and ask for critism from coaches on what i can do to help be suceed at the drill or if it is a play different ways to make it work, so that if I can’t think of one way to do it in a game I will always have a backup plan.
During games i will cheer on my team and give them support even if we have been defeated, they should still be told what a great game they played.
I will give myself proper nutrition, training, rest, and metal support to help myself become a better ringette player.
My mission is to help my game by working on four different areas. The first thing I am going to work on is nutrition. I think that by eating healthier I will have more energy and I will feel better about my body. My goal is to not eat a treat every day, but every other day, and I am going to decrease it every month. I am also going to eat a healthy meal before each game instead of junk food.
The second thing I am going to work on is aerobic fitness. This will help me not get tired during the game and outlast my opponent. My goal is to use the hill on my driveway to increase my stamina. Every other day, starting tomorrow, I will count how many trips up and down I can run in 15 minutes and work on increasing that number every week. When we have snow, it will slow me down, but I won’t stop!
The third thing I am going to work on is strength and speed. This will help me get up faster off of the ice (I’m a goalie!)and help me have stronger poke checks. My goal is to every other day do a variety of push-ups and sit-ups, as well as other excercises for 15 minutes. I will record how many sit-ups and push-ups I can do and try to increase that number every week.
Lastly, I am going to try and use Kim’s blog to help me and keep track of my progress.
My Mission Statement:
To become the best player on my team and the top scorer in my division this season.
To be noticed by scouts during the major tournaments we will be in this year.
To continue to improve at the same rate that I have been for the last 4-5 years.
To develop my strength and shot.
My Story:
I didn’t start playing hockey until I was 10. I improved so immensely in the first 3-4 years that I was one of the best female players in my city, then I started trying out for provincial teams and realized I still had to work even harder to get to the top of that level. I am going into my 1st year Midget and although it is the 3rd year I’ve played female hockey, it is the first year I will have some real female competition. I have went to New Brunswick for the ACC with my provincial team for the last two years in a row (My 1st year I was 14 years old and made the U15 team and this year I was 15 and made the U18 team as the youngest player on the team) next year there will be a U17 team that I will tryout for and I hope to be in the top 3 so I can move on to team Atlantic. I really want to improve my hockey skills but I also need to gain more strength. I am hoping by having Kim Coach me via. her blog and e-mails that I will improve enough to make team Atlantic and eventually get an education out of it and possibly make team Canada one day.
What I need to do:
I am on a strength routine every day but it is just something I put together and I find it hard to stay dedicated. I will use Kim’s training tips and strength, endurance and agility routines to try and improve my game until I am at where I want to be. Also I need to eat properly all the time but especially before and after games and practices.
Day one:
Today I did 70 sit-ups, 6 push-ups, 10 side planks on each side and held a front plank for 30 seconnds. I also did not have a treat. Tomorrow, I am going to count how many times I can run up and down my driveway in 15 minutes and try the stair hop that you showed on your videos. Wish me luck!
Amy
Hi everyone,
These mission statements are AWESOME! You all did a terrific job of outlining exactly what you are going to accomplish in the next 3 months. Now all you need to do is take consistent action towards those goals for the next 84 days and the results will be truly amazing. Sign-up for the daily updates and keep posting your comments on the daily posts and you’ll be right on track to getting to the next level in no time. Great job!
~ Coach Kim
my mission?
lets start with my size, i plan to get stronger everywhere legs, arms etc. My plan is to start doing lunges and jump squats with weights, which hopefully will help my reaction time and speed.
Before games i plan to eat pasta and fruit, with plenty of water and fruit juice, so i dont get dehydrated.
I have a small team this year so getting in the best shape ever is key for me right now! and i want to go to provincials…so im going to do whatever i have to do to get there.
Hi Leigh,
Thanks so much for sharing your mission statement with us!
Just one quick tip: your pre-game meal sounds great - just make sure that you are having a little bit more protein in there. That could be in the form of adding a little bit of meat sauce or chicken or having some yogurt with the fruit. The addition of protein will keep you feeling full for longer so that you aren’t starving by the 3rd period.
And ow that you know what you want to do, it’s time to take consistent action each and every day.
Good luck!
~ Coach Kim
Day two:
Today I ran up and down my driveway 16 times in 15 minutes. That was really hard! I also did my front and side planks. My practice ran for a hour and a half so I didn’t have time to do the steps. Maybe tomorrow. Back to school tomorrow. See ya!
Sarah’s mission statement is to not only to shake the rust off of 3 seasons off the ice, but to become a better hockey player than I ever was before I stopped playing. Also, the work that I do on my own this year will make me good enough to make the U16 team next year and have my best and final hockey season of my pre-college years. I will not only work on my strength and stamina but I will do stick handling drills every day, get to stick and puck at least twice a week, and start playing in the adult hockey league. But most importantly, I will not lose sight of what caused me to give up so much just so I could play hockey again, even though I’ll only have the opportunity to play one season before going off to college—the pure love of the game. In moments of frustration I will not second guess my decision and say it was not worth it as I’ll never get anywhere because it’s not true. Just thinking about the game fills me with a passion and excitement that nothing else matches, and as long as it does, that is the only thing that matters.
Today I hopped 64 steps, 32 with each foot. This is hard, but I got better as I went. Before I started, I had some yogurt, cheese stick, granola bar and some real grapefruit juice. I didn’t have time to do my planks or sit ups. Practice took a hour and a half today, and then I had a small chocolate milk after practice. No treats for 3 days! I’m tired- I’m going to bed!
Amy
As my team’s only goal tender I will strive to keep my team’s faith in me strong, I will train harder this year than I ever have to make my parents comfortable attending my games and not nervous. I will do this irregardless of bruises and complaints. I will suck it up better than any man ever could!
My Mission statement as a young athlete is to participate and provide my best efforts consistently through hard work and determination. With self-discipline and a great attitude I will learn to succeed on and off the ice. I truly believe that with hard work, self discipline and sacrifice I will develop new skills and refine existing skills. Great sportsmanship and moral development are the by products of success in hockey as I see it. Hockey demands hard work and discipline but also support from your parents, friends and coaches. My ultimate goal is to play university hockey and receive a full scholarship to do so. I am determined to do so and will always give 110%.
Tonight after homework it was too dark to run my driveway, so I did 15 minutes of sprints on our eliptical machine. Then I did 100 sit-ups, 3 sets of 15 presses with 10 pound hand weights, pushed my Dad the length of our basement room 6 times(he weighs 260 pounds)while he was standing in stocking feet on a smooth floor, 8 push-ups, left and right side planks and 40 seconds of front planks. That was hard, but I feel GREAT!. I finished with a big glass of water and 8 ounces of vegetable juice. Oh, I haven’t had a treat in 3 days. I’ll treat myself this Friday when I go to the Lady Bulldog game. They are playing Mankato State! Good Night!!
My mission statement to take my game to the next level is to try as hard as I can every time I am on the ice. I will push myself with every drill I do in practice, every exercise I do at home and every shift I play during a game. I want to get better by pushing myself out of my comfort zone. During games, I won’t be afraid to try new things, and if I make some mistakes, I will battle to fix them. I asked my Dad to help me train at home so I can be fastest and strongest on the team. My goal this year is to become the player the coach puts on the ice the last 2 minutes of a championship game.
As the new trainer of 16 fabulous, enthusiastic 13-14 year old girls’ hockey team, my goals are as follows: My first priority is always safety, and fun. I want to get the girls to want to push themselves, so at the end of every game, they know that they gave their absolute best. I want every girl on our team to keep on playing the game of hockey because they love the game. I want the girls to want to push themselves at dryland training, because they know that I have thought about each of them and each of their individual strengths, and designed individual programs for each of them, so they can come back together on the ice, and feel strong, confident and passionate about the game and their team members. Our coach is amazing at creating new drills to build skills and inspire the girls to do their best on the ice. I want to assist in helping the team be responsible for showing that good sportsmanship, strong bodies, can create the best team, and, the most fun. I want the girls to look back upon this time in their lives and know that they really improved themselves and were inspired to keep on playing.
I purchased the “Best Hockey Season Ever” a few weeks back for the Girls U12A team I am coaching. The feedback I have been getting from parents, players and other coaches has been fantastic. In our most recent application of the system we worked together as a team to create our mission statement that will take to the next level by our home tourney on Jan 11th. Here it is:
The Chisago Lakes Girls U12A Hockey Team’s mission statement is, to take our game to the next level by our home tournament on January 11th by:
*Staying completely committed to improving our Game Both On & Off the ice.
*We will use our ice time to it’s highest and best use by:
*pushing ourselves to the edge of falling in all over speed drills and doing every drill at 110%
*we will concentrate on pushing off as hard as we can for faster and faster starts every time we start a drill
*We will not interrupt and will focus on the drill at hand.
*Conditioning will be exhilarating and fulfilling - we know we need it and will finish hard through the line with no short cuts.
*Off ice we will:
*Be on time so we always get our pre-ice warm ups done.
*We will always have our notebooks with us and will use them to set goals for each practice and game AND we will evaluate how we did after each skate.
*We will Rehydrate & Refuel Right Away after every skate.
*We will stretch before bed every night.
We know that when we stay committed to these 4 on ice and 4 off ice activities that by Jan 11th we will dominate our opponents right from the drop of the puck to the end of the game.
Today I did stair hops at school during recess. I talked some friends into joining me. I’m the only girl hockey player in my school, and I’m the only 10 year old girl goalie in my town (80,000 people!). I’m trying to make it to Minnesota Selects this year. I’m good enough, but my town doesn’t have as many girl hockey players as the cities. I’m going to have to stand out! When I got home, my stomach muscles were sore from yesterday. I had gym today too, and I did some more push-ups and sit-ups. When I got home, I worked out for a half-hour on the eliptical machine. It was the same as climbing a mile of stairs. My homework is done, and I’m going to watch some hockey on TV! Good night!
Miranda Stewart’s Mission statement: to take my game to the next level I will work hard every time my skates touch the ice. By January I will be scoring 2 goals a game minimum by making the most out of shooting practice and taking more shots in the mesh during games. I will shoot to score every time. I will work out (running, situps, bowflex) at least twice a week to be in great shape and will be eating healthy so I can play the 2nd overtime as easly as I play the 2nd period. I already give 100% on ice but I will also consistently work on skills off-ice like working the ball (stick handling) and shooting. I will mentally train myself to focus on the game starting when I get to the rink, leaving whatever happened that day at home and not worrying about it! These changes can affect my play positively and make me a better player. I plan to play hockey like I know I can so that some day I will be on the Olympic Women’s Hockey Team!
Jordan Niezelski’s Mission Statemant is: The first thing that I want to do is eat better. Chips, cookies, popcorn, soda, and candy are part of my regular diet. I need to stop eating junk food and eat healthier foods like fruit, bread, sandwhiches, and juice. I also want to practice at home more. I don’t shoot pucks at home very much and it shows at practice and during games. I also want to start working out on the days that I don’t have practice. I need to get where I can skate full speed for at least 50 seconds to a minute. Otherwise, I will never get to where I want to be. I also want to always give 100% effort all of the time. Many players only give full effort sometimes and we really need to give 100% ALL OF THE TIME. So, this si my statement and I will try to do these things so that some day I can go to the olympics for the United States of America.
Yesterday I took a day off. I had a fever and wasn’t feeling too good, so all I did was 15 stair hops. Today I feel better. I worked out for 30 minutes on the eliptical, 100 sit-ups, 29 push-ups, 33 lifts with 10 pound hand weights, 10 side planks for 30 seconds each and a 40 second front plank. I also pushed my Dad around the basement floor. Tonight I’m going to watch my favorite team and have some ice cream to reward myself. Go Bulldogs!
Amy
My Bulldogs won!I had my ice cream too. Today I did 70 stair hops and some stretches. I also had a hour and a half practice. I’m tired, so I skipped tonights Bulldog game so I’d have a good practice tomorrow.
Amy
Hi Kim
I tried the bagel before the game, and I felt not like i had a heavy stomach full but i felt full but light. I was able to last longer in the game before becoming extensively tired, we lost but I felt so light. I was able to skate faster too and keep skating by following the tips in the paralysis by analysis article.
Thanks for the help
Dear Kim,
We are scheduled for shooting practice this upcoming weekend, and im really looking forward to it. I practice my wrist shot at home but we never have time at practices. And last game I hit the cross bar and posts! But i am really looking forward to have some help with my aim.
Ill let you know how it goes
Megan
We had another hour and a half practice today. Before practice I worked out for a half hour on the eliptical, and did 100 sit ups and side planks and front planks. I had a really good practice. I challenged the older goalies. One of the 14’s got upset because I was beating her in skating drills so she tripped me. I beat the 12 goalie in a scrimage 8-2! Tonight I’m going to watch Waking Up Wally. It’s about Wayne Gretzky and his Dad.
See ya!
Today I did 100 stair jumps, power skating for one hour, and one half hour of plyometrics with our coach. Me and one other girl by far did the best push-ups of anyone on our team. We each did 50!
Now I’m going to finish my homework and go to bed.
Amy
Hi. Yesterday I did 60 10 pound hand weight presses, 100 sit-ups, 20 push-ups, 30 minutes on the eliptical, front planks and side planks. Today, before power skating for an hour I had pasta and red sauce. After skating, I did over one hour of lots of different exercises. I did planks, skating lunges, ladder drills, butt-kickers, skips, push-ups and sprints. Oh yeah, I finished one and a half hour of home work. I’m pooped!
Amy
Hello! Thursday I started on the TFH strength program I won. It was pretty hard, but it felt good. I also mixed in some balancd drills you showed in your videos, and some push-ups. On Halloween I had a hour and a half practice, then went trick or treating with some of my friends. We came back to my house and ate tacos and candy for a sleep over. Today I did my TFH program PLUS a 20 minute warm up on the eliptical, 60- 10 pound hand presses, thirty sit ups, balance excercises, 20 sky jumps and I have a hour and a half practice tonight.
See ya!
Amy
Hi! Today is my off day. I’m still doing some stuff though. We had an early practice today and it was daylight savings, so I went to the rink early and did stair runs for about 15 minutes. After that, I did 15 spring jumps. After my hour and a half practice, I had a chocolate milk, salad and some chicken with mustard. Gotta go now, its homework time.
See ya!
Amy
My mission statement is to
-increase the level of my upper body strength
-try to have the best nutritional meal I can before each game
-be able to do 75 situps in 60 secs
-I will take at least 100 shots a day to improve my accurcy and strength
-to teach myself how to be mentally prepared for every game
-to influence my team to become mentally, nutritional, and physically prepared for every game and to do after hockey “cool-downs”
-tryout for teams that will challenge me to play my best
-give 100% everytime, but i hope to improve the range of my 100% by the end of the season
About Riley: I am 10 years old and play on an Atom AAA Tier 1 team. I am the only girl on my team. I am lucky because I come from a hockey family and have good coaching so I have been doing off-ice conditioning and nutrition for a year or so. I am a good practice player but something happens when I am in a game that I can’t explain. I become tentative and maybe a little scared. I lose races and battles that I should win. My team is struggling right now because we are not playing like a team. I have always played forward. My coach asked me to start playing defence today as my team needs a stay at home defenceman.
Riley’s Mission: My mission is to transform into a powerful, stay at home defenseman that is a good first passer and wins battles and races to the puck. I will be mentally prepared and believe in my ability every time I hit the ice. I will ooze confidence. I will train off-ice 4 days per week including sit-ups, push ups, agility, stationary bike and shooting. I will have a slap shot that will make every boy I play against want to get out of the way. My transformation will raise the level of play of my teammates because they will not want to be outplayed by a girl. I will be a lead by example type player.
Here is the mission statement the coach of the Oakville Hornets Bantam AA Team sent my way - great stuff!

-> Demonstrate good work ethic in practices and games
-> Strive to be well conditioned by exerting extra effort at all times

-> Support and respect teammates both on and off the ice
-> Demonstrate respect for the authority of coaches and referees

-> Improve technical hockey skills as much as possible
-> Exhibit concentration and genuine effort when developing or enhancing hockey skills
-> Commit to achieving the highest possible speed of execution of skills and play patterns in practice and games
-> Enhance player understanding and love of the game of hockey
-> Learn and use the “language of hockey”
-> Demonstrate greater understanding and use of on-ice hockey sense
-> Create team spirit and comradeship
